  5. Unbiased opinion:  The most cost-effective, efficient, productivity-enhancing accessory I have.   If you have a LaserWriter, BUY IT!

  7. LaserServe is a print spooler for the Apple LaserWriter.  It  works almost seamlessly.  Any application that does not use the standard Apple Print Manager (namely PageMaker™ 1.2 or below, and Just Text™) or printer drivers will not benefit from LaserServe, but will suffer no ill effects.

I've successfully used LaserServe with Word™, Ready,Set,Go 3™, Jazz™, MacWrite™, MacPaint™, Full Paint, GraphicWorks™, MORE™, Guide, Cricket Draw™ and others.  In addition, it has been compatible with desk accessories such as MacLightning™, Tempo™, Sidekick's™ accessories, Locator and Hard Disk Partition™.   I'm told PageMaker 2.0 is fully compatible.

Contrary to a mention in the Ready, Set, Go manual, LaserServe will automatically download fonts if the LaserWriter ROM version is 2.0.  (Look at the small numbers under the bar chart in the test sheet to determine the version number of your LaserWriter ROMs.)  Files waiting in the queue can be deleted or their printing priority rearranged; information is available about the files waiting in the queue (their name, file size and location) as well as the printer (status: idle, printing, processing job, etcetera).  LaserServe will report when a job is completed, if requested, and will automatically boot (an invisible INIT routine is put in the system folder).

The application itself is 63K and needs to reside in the system folder.  It does create rather large files for spooling.  I use a hard disk so this limitation doesn't concern me; but people with floppy-based systems would be well advised to have at least one 800K disk to which the files are spooled.

  15. I briefly look at Think Technologies new LaserWriter spooler at the Mac Expo.  It looked very, very similar.  It would work with versions of PageMaker below 2.0, and it was a smaller program, and produced smaller print files.
